Celebrating World Book Day at Jellybeans Childcare: A Day of Learning and Imagination
At JellyBeans Childcare, we believe that World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity to nurture creativity, literacy, and a love of storytelling. Where we celebrated the magic of books and brought the stories to life with a variety of fun, interactive activities. This year, our young learners explored a range of beloved stories through hands-on experiences, creating a day filled with imagination, learning, creativity. From classic tales like ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ to exciting adventures of ‘The Adventures of Peter Rabbit’. Here’s a look at the wonderful activities we had in store for our young learners.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar: A Journey of Growth and Discovery 🐛

Our World Book Day festivities began with the timeless classic ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. This story is a fantastic way to teach children about transformation, healthy eating, and counting. At JellyBeans Childcare, we improved the experience by introducing a ‘Hungry Caterpillar Play Dough’ activity, where children can play-around with their creativity and create their own caterpillars, fruits, and butterflies. This activity was not only fun but also helped develop fine motor skills as children rolled, squished, and shaped the dough. Additionally, it provided a sensory experience that reinforced the story’s themes of growth and change in an engaging and hands-on way.
As part of our continued celebration of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, we brought out the ‘The Hungry Caterpillar Play Dough’ activity. Our young learners had a blast rolling, squishing and shaping the colourful play dough into caterpillars, fruits, and flowers. This sensory activity encourages creativity and problem-solving, while also helping to strengthen fine motor skills, skills that are so important at this developmental stage.

Gruffalo Crumble: A Tasty Adventure in the Woods 🍪

Next, we ventured into the world of ‘The Gruffalo’, one of the most loved characters in children’s literature. We introduced a fun and interactive ‘Gruffalo Crumble’ activity, where children can mix and match ingredients to make their own crumbles, inspired by the story. With a dash of imagination and plenty of creativity, our young learners are delighted in creating their own ‘Gruffalo-inspired’ treats. It was a perfect way to link the love of reading with the joy of baking, all while exploring the world of the Gruffalo’s forest friends.
We also created a ‘Gruffalo Wood’ for the children to explore, complete with hidden forest creatures, footprints, and exciting adventures. This sensory experience encouraged imaginative play and helped the children engage with the characters of The Gruffalo in a hands-on way. Through play, children were able to develop their understanding of the story while also learning about nature and the environment.

Stick Man Sensory Tray: Exploring Nature and Imagination 🌲

In another exciting corner of JellyBeans Childcare, our young learners explored a ‘Stick Man Sensory Tray’. Using natural materials like leaves, sticks, and twigs, children engaged in imaginative play, creating their own stick men and learning about the environment. Sensory trays are a fantastic way for young children to develop their tactile senses and creativity. This activity was a wonderful way to connect with the story of Stick Man, where children could recreate their own woodland adventures. The Stick man Sensory Tray fostered a deeper connection to nature while improving their cognitive skills such as categorisation and pattern recognition.
The Adventures of Peter Rabbit: Role Play and Matching 🐰

Finally, we introduced ‘The Adventures of Peter Rabbit’ through a matching and role play activity. Children were presented with character cards and encouraged to match them with the correct animals from the story. This activity supported early literacy and language development, as children learned to recognise characters and their roles in the story. Role play also promoted social skills, empathy, and communication as children acted out different scenes from the book. This imaginative activity allowed children to embody the characters and deepen their understanding of the narrative in a fun and interactive way.
We can take great pride in diversifying the types of activities that the children take part in, allowing them to grow in a variety of ways and engage with different senses and emotions. Embracing a day like World Book Day allows children to explore their imagination and creativity in lots of different and exciting ways and we try to ensure that there is a diverse and plentiful mix of activities on offer.
