Play-Led Learning | Sensory Water Play 🍊💦

At our nursery, we believe children learn best when they are free to explore, experiment and follow their own interests. One of the ways we support this is through play-led learning, where activities are rich in sensory experiences.

Recently, the children enjoyed a cranberry, orange and fir water play activity, designed to engage their senses and encourage curiosity. Using natural materials, the children explored different scents, textures and colours at their own pace.

Why Water Play Is So Important

Water play is a powerful element of play-led learning and supports children’s development in many ways:

Sensory exploration
Water activities stimulate multiple senses at once. The feel of the water, the smell of orange and fir, and the visual contrast of cranberries all help children make sense of the world around them and build sensory awareness.

Fine motor skills and coordination
Pouring, scooping, squeezing and stirring help strengthen small muscles in the hands and fingers, supporting early writing skills and hand-eye coordination.
